![]() ![]() I played through all the contra games other than the portable versions. Arcade Super Contra is almost really great but the iffy controls drag it down a lot it's probably the weakest in the series as far as Konami-made games go. The Game Boy game is decent but the NES games are better. Year-later edit lol: Shattered Soldier is indeed really great (but I probably like 3 and HC a little better, SS can feel a bit too rote sometimes and its finale is kind of limp). I still need to play Shattered Soldier sometime it seems like a great game. The arcade game's short length and weird stage progression seems offputting at first, but I think the stage design in it gels with the game's simple mechanics much better than the NES game's. I actually like the original arcade version of the first more than the NES one - looking at them side-by-side, the NES game's levels feel stretched out and kind of substance-less. The original two games are alright - solid and fun, but there's not enough to them, especially when compared to all the Contra games that came after them. It's got some good moments for sure, but it feels so unambitious and sloppy at points that it's hard to get passionate about it. I like Hard Corps a little more for its speed and because some of the bosses are cool, but it's both more uneven and easier than Contra III, so the two games are pretty close.Ĭontra 4's alright. It's probably one of the best sidescrollers ever made there's really no competing with its great moveset and fantastic bosses.Ĭontra III and Hard Corps are really great too. Hard Corps: Uprising is definitely the coolest. The Konami sign at the end of the USA version is just the word "Konami", but in the Japanese ![]() The Japanese version, it goes straight to the credits. In the USA version ending, it says "You've destroyed the Red Falcon," or something, but in When you defeat the heart, the music is different in the Japanese version. As you shoot the heart at the end of The Alien's Lair, the ground gets even faster! As you get closer to the heart in The Alien's Lair, the ground moves faster. In the Alien's Lair, the ground moves (it's hard to explain). The big trucks in The Snow Field are sometimes much faster in the Japanese version. In The Snow Field, there is snow in the foreground. In the Snow Field, the trees wave back and forth (like there is wind). In The Waterfall, the water is more colorful in the Japanese version. In The Jungle, the trees in the background wave back and forth (like there is wind). The rock formation in The Jungle differs in both versions. The Japanese Contra shows a map of the game indicating where you are in the game. Instead of just telling you what level you are about to enter (before you start the level), You will notice this one right away: the Japanese version of Contra has cutscenes in between Targets, etc.), but in the Japanese version, they keep moving. When you pause the game in the USA version, the moving background objects stop (waterfalls, The Japanese version of Contra seems to be harder than the USA version. Before the Demo in the Japanese Version, a message appears on the screen (I have no idea what The USA title screen and the Japanese title screen look different (this is an obvious change). The Japanese version doesn't do this - the The USA title screen scrolls in from the right. The US vs the Japanese version of Contra (have no idea whats different in Probotector) Playing Shattered Soldier and I'm liking it but the difficulty and lack of check points is proving tiresome. Because of the scandal, this lead to the renaming of Contra 2 and one of the Gameboy Contra's to Super C and Operation C.Īnd for good measure another developer followed suite and named a Run 'n Gun title after a cold war operation named Bay Route (get it?). ![]() There is documentation in the arcade version making reference to rebels in the jungle. Trivia: it does appear that developers took the name Contra from the Iran/Contra scandal. It features: branching paths, 4 selectable weapons, 4 unique characters, 4 entirely different final levels with 4 entirely unique bosses (no re-used assets here), a secret level with a secret ending, and the word Damn is used twice. Gunstar Heroes could be the best Run 'n Gun title but there's a whole library of amazing Contra games.Īll good games but I couldn't get into Contra 4 because of the dual-screen gimmick. I love Run 'n Gun and it doesn't get much better than Contra. One of the most consistent video game franchises with very few bad games. ![]()
